Launched on Baisakhi 2008, the Sikh Community Center of Washington, D.C. is led by Executive Director Lakhinder Jit Singh Vohra, a journalist and web evangelist who has worked for national newspapers and magazines both in the US and internationally. Most recently, he worked as the D.C. Editor for the Washington Examiner newspapers web operations. He has also worked for the Washington Business Journal and the Washingtonian magazine. He is a ROTARY SCHOLAR and received a masters in journalism from Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, Chicago, IL. He is the Founder of PartyDigest.com and currently spearheads day-to-day operations as Founder, President & CEO of NewsroomContent.com and CricketPremi.com. The SCCDC is currently in funding mode and is seeking seed capital to open a community center that would be convenient to the local Sikh community in DC, VA & MD. While it continues the fundraising drive to set up a physical location, SCCDC has an aggressive Internet strategy to leverage the powers of the web to bring the Sikh community closer and bridge the gap between the generations of the Sikhs to came to the area as immigrants and their subsequent generations that have settled, integrated and excelled into the American Dream. Among the activities planned by the SCCDC are: The First-ever Sikh Beauty Pageant for the Washington, D.C. area. A Business Directory showcasing Sikh-owned businesses in the area An Annual Gala honoring local Sikh entrepreneurs and charity-givers English-speaking, conversation and personality development classes for girls Etiquette Training Classes An Annual Sikh Mela for the DC metropolitan area Sikh Speed dating Socials Media Training Workshops Web development workshops for local Sikh-owned businesses Day-trips to area museums for the elderly A Sikh Cruise A New Year's Eve gala
